Laboratory methods note
The samples were stored at -20°C because the original collection date was not recorded.
The lab stored the samples at -20°C because no one recorded the original collection date.
Why the rewrite is better: Both clauses are flagged, but the first passive may be worth keeping because the samples and storage conditions matter more than the technician. The active option makes the missing record more explicit so the writer can choose the appropriate emphasis.
Passive voice shifts attention from the actor to the action or recipient, which can be useful when the actor is unknown, unimportant, or deliberately left unstated. It can also make responsibility vague or add unnecessary words. This checker highlights likely passive constructions, explains where the actor has disappeared or moved, and offers a specific active alternative for comparison. Keep the passive form when it supports your emphasis; choose the active rewrite when naming the actor makes the sentence clearer, shorter, or more accountable.
