Why the rewrite is better: The result sets off the direct question with a comma and quotation marks, capitalizes its opening, and removes the redundant period after the question mark.
Punctuation tells readers which ideas belong together, where a thought pauses, and whether a word shows possession. A misplaced comma can create a splice, while an absent apostrophe can change who owns what.
